Bled is the postcard. Slovenia is the week.

Postojna, Bled, the Soča and a table in Ljubljana.
The four bookings a first week in Slovenia hangs off. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.
01The lake dayTrip to Lake Bled and Bled CastleBled and the castle above it, out and back from Ljubljana before dinner. The day everyone books first.
02The whole countrySlovenia in One Day: Lake Bled, Postojna Cave and Predjama CastleLake, cave and cliff castle in one long run. The answer when you have a single spare day and a hire car you did not want.
03The wet oneCanyoning in Susec CanyonSusec canyon in a wetsuit, jumping and abseiling down it. Bovec runs these from spring meltwater to early autumn.
04The eveningSlovenian Cuisine Walking Tour with TastingsLjubljana on foot with the eating built in, ending somewhere with Slovenian wine and no hurry.
The Soča runs emerald out of Bovec. Pick your way onto it.
One valley sends people down one river four different ways. What it costs to get on the water, and how wet each one leaves you.
Bled: row out to the island, then climb the cliff above it.
A pletna boat and ninety-nine steps get you to the church. The castle on the cliff gets you the photograph of it. Bohinj, twenty minutes on, is the lake people here actually swim in.
Every Lake Bled day out →Ljubljana sits in the middle, and nothing is more than two hours out.
A capital you can cross on foot, a lake with a church on it, the valley the Soča cuts, two Venetian towns on the short Adriatic coast, and the limestone country in between. Six starting points, and the best day out from each.
Triglav is on the flag, and most of the park is walkable.
Gorge boardwalks bolted to the rock at Vintgar, the Savica waterfall at the head of Bohinj, and passes that switchback up from the tree line. The alpine half of the country starts an hour from the capital.
Ljubljana: castle on the hill, dinner on the riverbank.
Everything in Ljubljana →
The old town takes an afternoon, which leaves the evening for the market bars and a table over the Ljubljanica. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.

Funicular up, footpath down
The castle sits on the hill the city grew around. The funicular takes a minute, the path takes twenty, and the view over the red roofs to the Alps is the same either way.
Slovenia’s most booked days out.

Three things that only happen in Slovenia.
Lakes and mountains are everywhere in this part of Europe. An underground railway, a castle built into a cliff mouth and a river that runs turquoise for sixty miles are not.

The Postojna Cave Train
The tour starts on a narrow-gauge railway that runs two kilometres into the hillside, opened in the 1870s and still the way everyone arrives at the big chambers. You walk the rest with a guide, past the pillar they put on the postcards and the tank of olms, the pale blind salamanders that live nowhere else. It holds about ten degrees all year, so take a jacket in August.

Predjama Castle
Nine kilometres from Postojna a castle is jammed into the mouth of a cave, halfway up a hundred-metre wall of rock. It has stood there in some form for eight hundred years, and the tunnels behind it let the knight Erazem hold out through a siege while supplies came in the back way. Most cave tickets pair the two, and the drive between them takes fifteen minutes.

The Soča
Limestone ground to flour by the water keeps the Soča a hard, bright turquoise from the Trenta valley down past Bovec and Kobarid, and it does not fade with depth the way a lake does. The colour is strongest in the low light of morning and after rain. Rafts, kayaks and canyoning ropes all put you inside it.

Four Slovenian bookings that will not wait.
Most of this country can be arranged over breakfast the day before. These four run on cave timetables, gorge seasons and river levels that take no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle Tickets and TourThe cave runs on fixed departure times and each train has a set number of seats. Summer mid-mornings go first.
- 02Lakes Bled & Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge Small-Group Day Trip from LjubljanaThe gorge closes for the winter and reopens with the thaw, and entry is capped through the day once it does.
- 03Whitewater Rafting on Soca River, SloveniaThe Soča is at its biggest in the spring melt and thins out by late summer. The season stops when the water does.
- 04Skocjan Caves, Lipica & Piran: Karst & Coast Small-Group Day Trip from LjubljanaThe white stallions only perform on set days of the week, and the stables close around them.
When the cloud sits on the Julian Alps, go under them.
Weather comes over the mountains here with very little notice, and a wet day closes the gorge boardwalks and flattens the lake. The answer is indoors and underground: caves that hold ten degrees whatever the sky is doing, cellars, a covered market, and a castle you reach by funicular.
By place — capital, lakes, valley and coast
By kind of day — cave, river, ridge or table
Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj, Bovec, the karst, the coast: a week that closes on itself.
